The reticular formation was one of the last neuroanatomical structures to be described. Even today, there is no consensus on the nervous system elements that make up this anatomical structure. Such famous anatomists as Reil, Deiters, Burdach, and Cajal, among others, have progressively contributed with new findings regarding the description of the reticular formation. Nevertheless, experiments performed in particular by Bremer, Moruzzi, Magoun, and Jasper have helped enormously to complement and clarify the growing body of knowledge regarding the neurophysiology of the reticular formation.
